Moncloa is a private all-male university affiliated with the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, which was founded in 1943.
Living accomodations are available - complete with cleaning and maintenance services-, with a complete list of cultural activities, and a professional academic orientation.
We are a very different type of university.
The university comprises itself around a family of professors and students, where social and cultural aspects of life are developed. Everyone knows each other at the Colegio Mayor. There exists no type of prejudice or hatred, as students learn to live with each other and respect each other´s views. The time spent at Moncloa has been, for many, the best time of their lives.
The style of life, positive attitude, traditions and events, and the intellectual and humane stance on life, are what make the university what it really is, and also provide for much success.

Formation and History
In the year 1943, St. Josemaría Escrivá encouraged some university professors to look for a new location for the Residence of Calle Jenner 6, which had opened its doors in 1939, shortly after the end of the civil war. In the final months of the 1942/1943 academic year, the student body reorganized to a local hotel (in traditional Madrid terminology) at the Avenida de la Moncloa, bordering the Ciudad Universitaria.
On October 1, 1943, after many months of work, the Residence at Moncloa was opened. The first director was D. Teodoro Ruiz Josué, and was very quickly followed by D. Pedro Casciaro, a mathematician. D. Pedro left a profound mark in the positive nature that today is still a revered characteristic of Moncloa, and also the beautiful decoration of the building. Some of the furniture belong to his own family. One of the first residents was D. Vicente Mortes, who was also the oldest at the Jenner residence, was chosen as dean of the new Residence. Mortes lived in Moncloa until 1949, and later became Minister and President of Nestlé España.
On October 7, 1943, Josemaría Escrivá - who fulfilled the priestly duties of the Residence and who was the inspiration of the academic institution - explained to his new residents the nature of his work. Therefore, the residents and establishment formed an agreement, in the form of a contract. The Residence offered students housing and domestic services, all focusing on the emphasis of study and the cultural and social expansion of the students. In exchange, each resident promised to a reasonable coexistence with each of the other residents, which was and is the principal purpose of the Residence.
The feeling, from the first moments of the university´s new formation was one of great confidence. The Christian identity was openly presented, and Josemaría Escrivá, the founder of Opus Dei, explained that the residents should have the ability to freely think (in the human and the divine), whereby no one was obligated to participate in the religious customs of character. In that time of Postwar Spain, this type of thought was an innovation.
The Administration of the Residence had a crucial role from its conception. With the help of Carmen Escrivá, (Josemaría´s sister), a group of women attended the Colegio Mayor, and set the standards for a formidable education and respect which would be developed in the years to come. |

Academic Mission
Moncloa is a university with a Christian academic mission. The fundamental ideals associated with the university stem from the role St. Josemaría Escrivá had in its formation.
The Organic Law of Universities (Official State Gazette from the 21st to the 24th of December of 2001), in its fifth additional regulation, states that Colegios Mayores are "centros universitarios que, integrados en la Universidad, proporcionan residencia a los estudiantes y promueven la formación cultural, científica y humana de los que en ellos residen, proyectando su actividad al conjunto de la comunidad universitaria y de la sociedad" ("downtown universities, integrated within the main university, which offer up accomodations to students, promote cultural, scientific, and humane growth, and which plan activities together with entire university community to benefit all of society").
In coherence with its collegiate and Christian identity, the most significant characteristics of Moncloa´s academic mission are:
- Favoring an atmosphere for serious academic studies, developed toward service.
- The family ambience, wherein each student knows and respects the opinions of each other.
- Freedom and Responsibility. Voluntary Religious Actions and Services.
- Distinguished education, respect for others, and a positive attitude.
- A doorway to all aspects of knowledge, from arte to culture. The residents have their own personal humanistic motto: "homo sum et nihil humanum a me alienum puto" ("I am human, therefore nothing human is strange to me").
- The primary concern is to leave a mark on society, and especially to those who need it the most. These college years comprise of the moment when students compel each other to the highest goals of service in society, all the while assuming a resigned and effort-based attitude.
- The historic and respectful aspects of the traditions of the university.
- A sense of Christian life, the knowlege and the concern to know the Christian doctrine and to live in the service of others.
- Moncloa is a corporative work of Opus Dei. Its central entity and work is the Fundación Moncloa 2000, which was started by alumni, and which follows the example of St. Josemaría Escrivá´s academic message. Since 1943, the Prelature of Opus Dei has provided Christian orientation through all forms of activities, and has offered spiritual attention to the daily lives of the students.
